The storm has broken

My first novel has been released.

It combines fantasy, romance and steam engines. You can see everything but the steam engines on the cover, and even then some of their cogs ended up behind my name. :) It's the story of a battle fought with cannons against magic, and of a man whose rising star met a fallen woman.

My editor says, "The book didn’t let go." It didn't let go of me either, when I was writing it, but don't take our word. Read the first chapter here.

And if you'd like to find out what happened after that, Before the Storm is available at...

My publisher's bookstore in the following formats : Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Acrobat for Sony, eBook ETI-2, EPUB, HTML, Microsoft Reader, Mobipocket/Kindle, Rocketbook

Amazon

Lybrary.com

Drive Thru Fantasy

I'll keep adding to the list. :)

Getting Before the Storm to where it is right now was a roller-coaster ride that left me sometimes excited and sometimes exhausted, but never regretting a moment of it. I had a lot of fun coming up with this book's characters and story and world. I hope you have fun reading it!

Marian,

Major congratulations to you!!

I read the first chapter. It's really good. The opening piqued my interest, and you have a very nice, eloquent writing style.

Great job, Marian! You've finally succeeded in your long quest.

Thanks, Kim!

And Maria, I appreciate all your help so much! A comment you made in your guest blog has also given me an odd little idea for promotion which I will blog about as soon as I have a little time.

Tasha - Thanks! Honestly, that first chapter all but wrote itself. The main characters' personalities just bounced off each other. :)

Loren - Quest to get published? Yes. Quest to become multiply published and sell many, many more copies. Not yet.

*taps fingers together like Mr Burns*

Thank you! :)

I first read BtS in an early draft version years and years ago, and gave Marian a lot of feedback on it. Since then I have read a lot of other manuscripts by Marian, some of which I think are a lot better than the original BtS manuscript I read - a sign of development and progress in a writer, obviously.

When Marian told me that she'd found a publisher for BtS I was pretty much stoked as hell because this has been a lifelong dream of hers and she took it seriously. When I read the first chapter preview, though, I was blown away... I mean of course I had already read it and was kinda familiar with it, but I forgot how gripping that first chapter really is. it's like a standard romance set-up reflected in a circus mirror that's haunted. It's creepy and tense and all I can say is I can't wait to have a physical copy to re-read.

Hey JH. You're one of the people who helped to make Before the Storm what it is and I'm very grateful.

The others are agents and editors, but you were there before them. :)

"...I forgot how gripping that first chapter really is. it's like a standard romance set-up reflected in a circus mirror that's haunted. "

I'm going to quote that for the website, because it's exactly what I had in mind as the world of Eden.

That's supposed to be a beautiful place, but it's corrupted instead. And every land reflects the fall in a different way.

Wow, Marian -- congratulations! I'm at work now and have no time, but I'll definitely get back to this and check out your first chapter!

I already know I'm going to like your writing style... :o)

Thanks, Mary! Yes, don't check it out when you're at work. Your students may be scandalized. :)
